Get Involved!
St. James enthusiastically engages in missions and ministries both locally and globally and would love to help you find a place to serve in the church, the community, and beyond.
Music Ministry
Our vibrant music program is a source of pride and joy. Whether you're a soloist, part of a small vocal group, or play in an instrumental ensemble, there's a place for you to share your talents in our worship services. We warmly invite everyone to join our Music Ministry and be a part of our musical family!
United Methodist Food Pantry
Volunteers are welcome to serve on the second Tuesday of every month from 4 to 8 PM, with two convenient shifts: 4-6 PM and 6-8 PM. Your support makes a difference! Additionally, the church gratefully accepts donations to help stock the food pantry with essential food and personal hygiene items.
Suds Buds
Suds Buds gathers monthly to create luxury soap for adults and teens experiencing temporary shelter due to abuse, neglect, violence, or other circumstances. Join us for our workdays, held on the second Thursday of each month at 10 AM.
Thanksgiving Meals
Donations are accepted to assist families in need through UMC Food Pantry.
Crisis Missions
St. James supports UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), a worldwide mission intervening in disasters, man-made and natural. UMCOR provides local disaster relief for our brothers and sisters in our community, along with local disaster response volunteers from our connection with other United Methodist Churches.
Chancel Choir
Our Chancel Choir is a dedicated group of about 20 members who meet for regular rehearsals every Wednesday from 6:30-7:30 pm. They provide beautiful music for our weekly worship services and prepare major choral works for Christmas and Easter and our biannual Holy Week production, "The Living Last Supper." for more information, contact Alan Jones.
Sew & So
This dedicated group gathers on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month. Together, they craft pillows, turbans, and quilts destined for distribution to cancer treatment centers and hospice groups across Abilene.
School Outreach
Members of St. James extend their gratitude and support to teachers at Alcorta Elementary School, Madison Middle School, and YMCA Daycare through heartfelt cards, letters, and small gifts, aiming to uplift and appreciate their dedication.
Christmas Missions
Each Christmas, we purchase Christmas gifts for children under the care of foster families at The Methodist Children’s Home in Abilene. Additionally, we buy gifts for Friends for Life, a non-profit dedicated to serving the elderly without family.
Handbell Choir
Join our Handbell Choir, which meets every Tuesday at 5:30 pm! This ensemble adds a unique touch to our worship services on special occasions. If you're interested, we encourage you to attend a handbell rehearsal and become part of this delightful musical tradition!
New Roots Garden
As an outreach connectional ministry, St. James has a designated ministry area of raised flower gardens. These gardens are planted and tended to by refugees new to Abilene who have found a welcoming home at our church.
Backpacks for Kids
During the school year, Backpacks for Kids gathers every two weeks to assemble bags filled with food for children identified by the school. These meals ensure they have something to eat over the weekend.
Global Missions
St. James supports global missions through our Shared Ministries of the greater United Methodist Church and through sponsorship within our congregation.
